A two-day event dedicated to the potters, handmade pottery, and a tradition that is an integral part of the village's identity.
Kornos is once again preparing to become a meeting point for those who love Cypriot tradition and folk art. The 13th Red Clay Festival will take place on the weekend of October 3-4, 2026, honoring an art form inextricably linked to the community's history and identity.
Kornos' reputation for pottery has extended beyond Cyprus's borders. For many decades, the village's female artisans transformed red clay into utilitarian and decorative objects, continuing knowledge passed down from one generation to the next.
Using their hands, simple tools, and local materials, they created jugs, pitharia (large storage jars), cooking utensils, pots, and other clay items. These vessels were not merely decorative; they served essential daily needs, such as transporting and storing water, wine, oil, grains, and food.
The Red Clay Festival was established to protect and highlight this valuable heritage. Through the event, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history of Kornos pottery, discover the different stages of clay processing, and appreciate the patience, skill, and creativity required to craft each vessel.
This year's event returns for two days filled with culture and creativity. Kornos will once again be at the heart of traditional pottery, inviting all ages to connect with an art form that, though at risk of being lost, continues to thrive thanks to those who lovingly preserve it.
The festival also offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the village, meet its residents, and discover a place that maintains strong ties to its history. Pottery is presented not as a distant relic of the past, but as a living chapter of Cypriot cultural heritage that can inspire younger generations.
The event is organized by Lefkara Municipality and the Kornos Municipal District. The detailed program of activities and timings will be announced soon.
